Why Kundalini Rising Feels Like a Panic Attack: The Sacred Secretion and Your Nervous System

The fire in your spine

Your spine starts to tingle. Then it burns. Your heart slams against your ribs. Your body trembles like it's trying to shake something loose. You wonder if you're having a panic attack — or a spiritual emergency.

The answer is both.

It's called kundalini rising. And your nervous system has no idea what to do with it.

Here's what I saw in practice: a man in his 40s, otherwise healthy, certain he was dying. Every night the heat started at the base of his spine and climbed. His chest tightened. His jaw clenched. He'd been to the ER 2 times. All tests clean. By the time he reached my table, he'd decided he was either possessed or losing his mind.

Neither. His spine was doing exactly what it was built to do. His nervous system was reading the sacred as a threat.

The oil that rises

You have a central canal running through your spinal cord. Inside it flows cerebrospinal fluid — CSF — produced by the choroid plexus, circulating from the base of your skull down to your sacrum and back up.

In my tradition, we call it the sacred secretion. The Christ oil. The anointing that was never supposed to leave the building.

The kundalini serpent is not a metaphor. It is the life force moving through that canal — the CSF, the Shakti, the frequency the ancients drew as a snake because they had no better word for fire with a spine.

33 vertebrae. 33 years. Your spine is the Bible, and the oil rises through every chapter.

Here's the part nobody tells you: the rising is not the problem. The container is.

When the body reads the sacred as a threat

Your vagus nerve — cranial nerve X — is the cross at your atlas, where the skull meets the spine. It carries 80% of its signals from the body to the brain. And your amygdala scans the environment 5 times per second, asking one question: safe or threat?

When the energy rises through a dysregulated nervous system, neuroception cannot tell the difference between kundalini and a predator. The amygdala says fire. The HPA axis floods you with cortisol. Your heart pounds. Your breath shortens. Your body trembles — the same tremor that shakes a deer after it escapes a wolf.

That's the panic. That's the "kundalini syndrome" so many people end up in the ER with. It is not possession. It is not a breakdown. It is a plumbing problem: the oil is rising through a pipe that was armored decades ago.

Where do you feel it? The braced psoas. The diaphragm that never fully exhales. The pelvic floor that learned to hold instead of release. The fascia — the liquid crystalline recordkeeper — holding every memory of your soul, including the ones you hoped died with your ancestors.

The energy doesn't rise through armor. It hits it. And the collision feels like an emergency.

The womb / hara is the foundation

The root of the rising is the root of the body: the pelvic floor. In my architecture, that's the foundation. The psoas is the pillar. The diaphragm is the ceiling.

When a woman's womb is braced, the energy has nowhere to go but up into panic. When a man's hara is frozen, the same. You cannot heal from the top down. You can only heal from the root up.

Regulation first. Revelation second. Never the other way around.

The practice: 4-4-6

The 4-4-6 Regulation Breath. The exhale is the vagal brake. When you lengthen the exhale, you tell the brainstem the threat is over. The amygdala down-regulates. The HPA axis gets the memo. And the oil — the rising — finally has a nervous system that can hold it.

Inhale through your nose for 4 counts. Let the belly rise. Not the chest. The belly.

Hold for 4 counts. Feel the diaphragm press down into the psoas.

Exhale through your mouth for 6 counts. Long. Slow. The way the body remembers safety.

90 seconds. The half-life of a cortisol spike. That's the whole prescription.

And the passcode: respect. You do not command the sacred to rise. You prepare the container. The ancients knew this. They called the energy a serpent because you don't grab a serpent — you make yourself worthy of its trust. Cannabis camouflages her full power until she knows you are ready. So does the oil. So does your own spine.

FAQ

Is kundalini awakening dangerous?

Not by itself. It becomes dangerous when it rises through a dysregulated nervous system and gets read as a threat. That's panic, not possession. Regulate the container first — the rising is the second coming your body has been running since birth.

Why does my spine burn or tingle during meditation?

That's the sacred secretion — CSF — moving through the central canal of your spinal cord. When the container is armored, the movement collides with held tension and reads as heat, tremors, or panic. Same current. Different plumbing.

How do I know if it's anxiety or a spiritual awakening?

Anxiety narrows. Awakening expands. Both feel like fire in the beginning. The test: when you regulate — when the breath lengthens and the body settles — does the fire soften into warmth, or does it stay stuck as alarm? Regulation reveals the difference. The signal survives the breath. The alarm does not.

The second coming is in your spine

The oil was always in you. They told you to go to church to get anointed. Your brain IS the church. Your spine IS the steeple.
